SUMMARY:People\, Place and Community report launch
DESCRIPTION:FoL’s People\, Place and Community project has been radically shaped by the Covid-19 pandemic. It led us to go beyond the physical built environment and to look in detail about how digital communities can have a huge impact on people’s connection to their local area and neighbours. \nThis webinar will look at the best approaches the built environment sector in London can take to encourage communities to thrive and explore the three main insights from the report: \n– Good quality design: Quality design plays a critical role in our experience of connection. How can the sector ensure that this is achieved for all members of the community?\n– Community ecosystems: Rather than imposing new approaches and ideas\, how can we identify\, foster and develop existing community ecosystems and help them thrive?\n– Inclusive digital connectivity: What role does the built environment sector have to play in overcoming the digital divide? \nThis event is open to all and encourages attendees to bring their comments\, ideas and questions which we will pick up on in the audience Q&A. \n\nConfirmed Speakers: \nPhil Askew\, Director of Landscape and Placemaking\, Peabody\nHarriet Boamah\, Director\, F.U.S.E Youth Project\nClaire Fram\, Senior Product Manager\, Arup\nFabrizio Matillana\, Principal Urban Designer\, LB Enfield\nKaye Stout\, Partner\, Pollard Thomas Edwards\nDavinia Venton\, Partnerships DIrector\, Countryside

SUMMARY:Build Back Better\, Embracing better living - powered by PechaKucha
DESCRIPTION:  \nBuild Back Better is a new initiative by New London Architecture to respond to the current crisis. The series looks into the future\, beyond the restrictions of our present situation. We invite innovative thinkers to present thought-provoking ideas and solutions for a resilient post-pandemic London. \n\n\n  \nThis Build Back Better event will discuss ideas for living that aid physical and mental health\, from homes for heroes and key worker housing to communal dwellings that improve wellbeing. \n  \nOur Senior Project Advisor\, Rowan Mackay\, was invited by the NLA to speak at this PechaKucha event to illustrate how community led housing can achieve these goals to offer innovative solutions for these uncertain times. Our talk is entitled ‘People Powered Homes: A Manifesto’. \n  \nJoin us at the event to find out more. If you are an NLA member\, you can book your place at this free event by visiting their website here. The webinar will be hosted on Zoom and joining details will be sent to registered participants. \n  \nThe format\, PechaKucha (ペチャクチャ)\, was devised in Tokyo in 2003 by the English architect Mark Dytham and has turned into a massive global celebration of design\, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”\, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. The format makes presentations concise\, keeps things moving at a rapid pace and holds its audience.

SUMMARY:Community Led Housing - a Feminist Solution
DESCRIPTION:The UK is in the midst of a housing crisis. According to the National Housing Federation\, this is affecting more than 8 million people\, 1 in every 7 people. House prices and rental costs have become unaffordable for many\, such that home ownership rates have declined significantly – from 43% for those aged 27 in the 1970s to 25% for those born in the late 1980s. Having a decent affordable home is a key determinant of people’s health and well-being. \nHousing is also a women’s rights issue with women making up the majority of lead social housing tenants\, and 2 in 3 housing benefit claimants. The gender pay gap means that women on average earn less – the housing knock-on effect is that women in the private rented sector spend an average of 55% of their income on rent\, compared with 36% for men. \nCommunity led housing models (such as housing co-operatives\, community land trusts (CLTs) and co-housing) have emerged as alternative solutions to the housing crisis. \nHosted by the Women’s Equality Party Hackney\, this online event will take a look at the history of community led housing in the UK with a focus on women’s co-housing. Speakers will include Gemma Holyoak (Senior Project Advisor\, Community Led Housing London)\, Marta Brenton (Senior Cohousing Ambassador\, UK Cohousing Network) and Angela Ratcliffe (convenor & resident of Older Women’s Cohousing Group (OWCH). \nDial in details will be emailed to participants ahead of the seminar. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking and inspiring evening!

SUMMARY:Co-op housing in challenging times
DESCRIPTION:Join us online with Co-ops UK and CHIBAH\, Brighton’s community housing network to discuss what housing co-ops can offer during these challenging times. \nIf home-working becomes the norm for many – and a glut of commercial properties become empty – landowners may need to rethink their traditional rental methods. Meanwhile redundancies and unemployment threaten our housing affordability. Never has it seemed more necessary for us to come together with other co-ops\, community groups and community businesses to work out ways that we can build back better. \nClick below to register via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Citizen-led responses to the Housing Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Stir to Action has launched 20 webinars in partnership with Power to Change to provide free training and peer support for those playing a vital role in their local economy during and after the crisis.\n\n\n\n\nThere is a housing crisis in the UK\, which manifests in lack of affordability\, diminishing social cohesion and massive environmental impact. Community led housing is a response to this crisis\, with citizens seeking to develop affordable homes that meet local need and respect the environment. It takes many forms\, including co-operatives\, co-housing\, community land trusts\, self-build and alms-houses. Key elements include the wish for democratic ownership and governance\, mechanisms to make housing affordable in perpetuity\, and increasing opportunities for self-provisioning\, through self-build and self-finish. \nEnabling hubs have been established across England\, Wales and Northern Ireland\, there is cross-party support for community led housing\, and there is a growing body of bottom-up experience to draw on. This webinar aims to explore how you can become involved in this growing citizen-led movement. \n\nTim Crabtree is a co-founder of Wessex Community Assets\, which is one of the UK’s largest enabling hubs for community led housing. He focuses on research and innovation\, and this links with an action research PhD he is undertaking at Plymouth University. Tim has worked for the New Economics Foundation and is the co-founder of a number of successful social enterprises including Local Food Links Ltd\, Dorset Community Energy\, and Bridport Area Development Trust.
