SUMMARY:Unlocking the Potential of Small Sites
DESCRIPTION:This breakfast talk\, hosted by New London Architecture\, will explore the current and potential role of small sites in the delivery of new homes and affordable housing. \nTo deliver the quantity of housing Londoners need\, sites of varying scale and complexity need to be developed. The specificity of small sites means they are often overlooked by larger developers\, calling for the expertise of SME developers and architects to overcome the challenges of problematic sites\, with further delays and complications found in the compliance with the planning system. \nRecent research from Pocket Living and Lichfields analyses how small sites can play a more meaningful role in housing delivery and considers the journey of small site developments through planning and the constraints and challenges they encounter. \nThis Breakfast Talk explores the role of small sites in the delivery of new homes and affordable housing. What are the constraints and challenges? How can we unlock land for housing more efficiently and streamline the process for SME developers in order to speed up the delivery of quality homes? \nSpeakers: \nPeter Murray\nCurator-in-Chief\, NLA \nNick Cuff\nChief Commercial Officer\, Pocket Living \nRemi Connolly-Taylor\nFounder and Director\, REMI·C·T Studio \nJonathan Martin\nDirector of Inward Investment\, London Borough of Waltham Forest

SUMMARY:People\, Place and Community report launch
DESCRIPTION:FoL’s People\, Place and Community project has been radically shaped by the Covid-19 pandemic. It led us to go beyond the physical built environment and to look in detail about how digital communities can have a huge impact on people’s connection to their local area and neighbours. \nThis webinar will look at the best approaches the built environment sector in London can take to encourage communities to thrive and explore the three main insights from the report: \n– Good quality design: Quality design plays a critical role in our experience of connection. How can the sector ensure that this is achieved for all members of the community?\n– Community ecosystems: Rather than imposing new approaches and ideas\, how can we identify\, foster and develop existing community ecosystems and help them thrive?\n– Inclusive digital connectivity: What role does the built environment sector have to play in overcoming the digital divide? \nThis event is open to all and encourages attendees to bring their comments\, ideas and questions which we will pick up on in the audience Q&A. \n\nConfirmed Speakers: \nPhil Askew\, Director of Landscape and Placemaking\, Peabody\nHarriet Boamah\, Director\, F.U.S.E Youth Project\nClaire Fram\, Senior Product Manager\, Arup\nFabrizio Matillana\, Principal Urban Designer\, LB Enfield\nKaye Stout\, Partner\, Pollard Thomas Edwards\nDavinia Venton\, Partnerships DIrector\, Countryside

DESCRIPTION:This event\, hosted by Hampshire Homes Hub\, will hear from an exciting range of speakers from across the country\, who all have amazing stories to share about how they have delivered homes for their communities. Their messages are inspirational\, honest\, and relevant for others already working on a project or perhaps just dreaming about one at this stage. Many of the stories will highlight truly innovative ideas that have the power to change the way new homes are delivered. \nThe speakers on 19 January 2021 include: \nCalder Valley CLT (Community Land Trust) – a community benefit society who have developed a community share offer to raise funding to protect community assets. \nSEASALT – a student housing co-operative. \nMaria Brenton – UKCN Ambassador for Senior Co-housing\, and pioneer of the first co-housing scheme in the UK for older people. \nHeart of Hastings – a CLT working in partnership with others to tackle urban deprivation\, including the transformation of a large\, disused\, town centre commercial building into a mixed use scheme including homes.

SUMMARY:Build Back Better\, Embracing better living - powered by PechaKucha
DESCRIPTION:  \nBuild Back Better is a new initiative by New London Architecture to respond to the current crisis. The series looks into the future\, beyond the restrictions of our present situation. We invite innovative thinkers to present thought-provoking ideas and solutions for a resilient post-pandemic London. \n\n\n  \nThis Build Back Better event will discuss ideas for living that aid physical and mental health\, from homes for heroes and key worker housing to communal dwellings that improve wellbeing. \n  \nOur Senior Project Advisor\, Rowan Mackay\, was invited by the NLA to speak at this PechaKucha event to illustrate how community led housing can achieve these goals to offer innovative solutions for these uncertain times. Our talk is entitled ‘People Powered Homes: A Manifesto’. \n  \nJoin us at the event to find out more. If you are an NLA member\, you can book your place at this free event by visiting their website here. The webinar will be hosted on Zoom and joining details will be sent to registered participants. \n  \nThe format\, PechaKucha (ペチャクチャ)\, was devised in Tokyo in 2003 by the English architect Mark Dytham and has turned into a massive global celebration of design\, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”\, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. The format makes presentations concise\, keeps things moving at a rapid pace and holds its audience.
