SUMMARY:Open House: Walter Segal Self-build Houses
DESCRIPTION:Open House London is the world’s largest architecture festival\, giving free public access to 800+ buildings\, walks\, talks and tours over one weekend in September each year. \nWe recommend visiting Walters Way\, a close of thirteen self-build homes in Lewisham by architect Walter Segal. \n\nThis council-run housing scheme was the first of it’s kind in the UK and saw a group of residents build their own homes on a derelict site in Lewisham. \nThe site was unsuitable for conventional house building because of the hills and large trees and was offered to people on Lewisham’s housing waiting list who were willing to build their own houses. \nThe simple construction method meant everyone could be involved and design the interior lay-out of their house. The houses were designed using a simple grid and standard timber sizes. The houses are lightweight and easy to adapt to people’s way of living. \nOpen house is a great opportunity to look inside as various homes will be open to the public and there will be a short documentary viewing.

SUMMARY:Open House: Hazelhurst Court
DESCRIPTION:Open House London is the world’s largest architecture festival\, giving free public access to 800+ buildings\, walks\, talks and tours over one weekend in September each year. \nWe recommend visiting Hazelhurst Court\, an award-winning development by Phoenix Community Housing of 60 extra care apartments for older people. \n\nWith funding from the Mayor of London and Lewisham Council\, the homes are for affordable rent and built next to their existing properties. These new homes allow older people to live independently in secure and comfortable accommodation\, within their communities and established networks of friends\, family and neighbours. The scheme also incorporates communal areas\, including a kitchen and dining area\, garden room and lounge area and a shared courtyard. \nPhoenix Community Housing is a not-for-profit resident-led housing association based in South London. They own and manage more than 6\,000 homes in Lewisham and are now starting to build their first new homes. \nDesigned by Levitt Bernstein\, the scheme has won awards at the Housing Design Awards 2018 and RIBA London Awards 2018. \nTo book a tour\, email communications@phoenixch.org.uk \n

SUMMARY:Open House: Marklake Court
DESCRIPTION:Open House London is the world’s largest architecture festival\, giving free public access to 800+ buildings\, walks\, talks and tours over one weekend in September each year. \nWe recommend visiting Marklake Court\, a community-led development of 27 affordable homes on the Kipling Estate in Southwark. \n\nMarklake Court is a is a new community-led development of council rent homes shows how allowing residents to take a lead can provide new housing on existing estates and result in positive outcomes for all. \nSupported by igloo Community Builders\, Leathermarket Community Benefit Society (CBS) identified an underused garage site on the Kipling Estate\, Southwark and have developed 27 affordable homes. \nAs Southwark’s largest resident-managed housing organisation\, Leathermarket JMB they manage 1500 homes between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. The JMB established their own Community Benefit Society in 2014 to bring forward genuinely affordable homes for the community\, following a housing needs assessment of residents. \nThe project was designed by Bell Phillips Architects who worked closely with Leathermarket CBS from the outset to co-develop proposals. \nThe new block at Marklake court is open all day on Saturday 22nd September.

SUMMARY:Tower Hamlets Self-Build Forum
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be presenting at the Tower Hamlets Self-Build Forum on August 14th. We’ll share how the hub can support groups and further information on the Advice and Feasibility Fund. \nThe meeting between self-build applicants and council officers is open to the public and attended by cabinet members responsible for housing and strategic development. \n\nThe Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 places a duty on local councils in England to keep a register of people who are interested in self-build or custom build projects in their area. This register shows the council the level of demand for self-build and custom build plots in their borough and helps them to develop a strategy for matching people to plots in their area. \n
